Welcome to Alternate Takes, a place for exciting and in-depth discussions of all aspects of cinema. Written by critics, academics, and students of cinema for a broad readership; an extended piece on our ethos and approach can be read here.

Unlike other film review sites, we review new films twice. The first review is a spoiler-free evaluation that gives away as little as possible to potential viewers. This is a review to read before you see the film. When you return from the cinema, you can then read our Alternate Take: a longer, more in-depth examination that discusses whatever it was that we found to be most interesting about the film.

As well as this, we also provide regular features that give detailed and passionate arguments about any, and all, the areas of film that we love, hate or have just plain thought too long about.
